"DEAN GOES NEGATIVE..."

DEAN THEN:            ''We need to remember that the enemy here is George Bush, not each other,'' said Dean.
 [Akron Beacon Journal, 9/26/03]

“He (Dean) said he chooses to not directly attack his Democratic counterparts because they all have the same goal in the end - getting a new, Democratic president in the White House. [Daily Oklahoman, 10/5/03]

DEAN NOW:             Iowa Ad:  DEAN: Seniors today are getting clobbered by Prescription drug costs.  But instead of fixing the problem, the best my opponents can do is talk about what was said eight years ago.  As Governor, I provided prescription drug assistance for seniors and got health care coverage for nearly every child in my state.  For years the politicians in
Washington have talked about health insurance and a prescription drug benefit.  And all you got was talk.  But we did it in Vermont.  I'm Howard Dean and I approved this message because only you have the power to change Washington. (10/22)

New Hampshire Ad:  DEAN: A hundred and thirty thousand troops in Iraq, with no end in sight and a price tag that goes up daily and the best my opponents can do is ask questions today that they should have asked before they supported the war. I opposed the war from the start because I want a foreign policy consistent with American values and I want to reclaim our rights and our liberties that were taken away in the name of patriotism. I'm Howard Dean and I approved this message because only you have the power to restore the dignity and respect that our country deserves. (10/22)

Gephardt Responds to Dean's Iowa Ad

Washington, DC - Rep. Dick Gephardt released the following statement today in response to former Governor Howard Dean's new television advertisement airing in Iowa.

"As a leader in Congress, I will put my record on health care up against anyone else's. I am proud that I led the effort to protect Medicare from deep Republican cuts, including mammograms in Medicare, subsidize health insurance for the unemployed through COBRA and increased funding for medical research and HIV/AIDS. My record of accomplishment is clear.

"I have continually led the fight for a prescription drug benefit under Medicare. While Governor Dean counts the Vermont prescription drug program as an accomplishment, the truth is he put it on the chopping block four separate times. When the chips were down and Governor Dean had to choose between balancing the budget and cutting prescription drugs for seniors, Governor Dean chose budget gamesmanship. That is not the type of president I would be.

"Finally, what Howard Dean said about Medicare eight years ago represents an important distinction between us that remains to this day. Governor Dean has expressed a continued willingness to cut Medicare to balance the budget. Governor Dean still believes Medicare is "one of the worst federal programs ever."  When Democrats send a nominee to go toe to toe with President Bush, it needs to be someone who can take the issue of retirement security directly to him and not someone who shares Bush's belief that Medicare is a deeply flawed program."

Enclosed are two documents. One details Gephardt's accomplishments on health care and the other summarizes Dean's efforts to cut prescription drug programs in Vermont as governor.

Statement by Dean Campaign Manager Joe Trippi Setting the Record Straight on Campaign Ads

BURLINGTON--"Governor Dean's opponents have been attacking him and distorting his positions for months. I suspect this is because they would rather attack than talk about why, with a combined three-quarters of a century in Washington, D.C., they have delivered few real results. When you look at the field of candidates there is a clear contrast between a record of results and a record of rhetoric. As both a doctor and a Governor, Howard Dean's record speaks for itself. He delivered healthcare to thousands with his own hands, provided a prescription drug benefit for seniors and healthcare for children, he increased environmental protections and balanced the budget.

"We know the American people understand the difference between results and rhetoric, and when other candidates distort Governor Dean's record of results--as they have for months--we're going to set the record straight."

--As you can see by the headlines below, the other campaigns made a strategic decision to attack Governor Dean after he surged ahead of them in the polls. Below are three pages of headlines on these attacks. Also, click on links to Governor Dean's ads below and see them for yourself.
