May 14, 2002. Sen. Biden and Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) [behind Biden] headed up a rally to push for reauthorization of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program. They condemned the Bush Administration's plans to cut funding for the program, arguing that COPS has prevented 750,000 crimes nationwide. Biden's COPS Reauthorization bill (S. 924), which had 51 cosponsors, would provide $1.15 billion per year to fund as many as 50,000 new police officers. |
