August 26, 2003--NOW/PAC chair Kim Gandy (R, in black) and NWPC president
Roselyn O'Connell (L, in gray) announced their organizations' support of
Carol Moseley Braun's bid for the presidency in an event at the National
Press Club. Moseley Braun said the support of NOW/PAC
and the NWPC
"guarantees that I will formally declare my candidacy for the Democratic
nomination." She said she will make that declaration on September
22.
C. Delores Tucker, who served six years as Pennsylvania Commonwealth Secretary in the 1970s urged the audience to "never underestimate the brains of Braun." Eleanor Smeal, former president of NOW, recalled that when Moseley Braun was in the Illinois State Senate "we really, literally worked out of her apartment" in the effort to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. "You don't even need to send out a questionnaire because she's done it," Smeal stated. |
