National Stonewall Democrats' Reception and Awards Presentation
Washington, DC--March 20, 2002.  Gov. Howard Dean and Rep. Dick Gephardt, flanked by activists David Mixner and Jeff Trammell, listen to speakers during the National Stonewall Democrats' first annual national reception and awards ceremony in Dupont Circle.  Many other Democratic leaders stopped in.  This event was the primary reason for Dean's Washington visit.  Earlier in the day he had lunch with NSD executive director Chad Johnson.

Drawing off his support for civil unions, Dean has sought to build a base in the gay and lesbian community.  His schedule at this time showed other gay and lesbian oriented events in recent months: speaker at Oct. 6, 2001 Human Rights Campaign reception in Washington, DC; keynote speaker at Nov. 10, 2001 Victory Fund dinner in San Diego; keynote speaker at  Feb. 2, 2002 California Alliance for Pride and Equity Dinner in Los Angeles; keynote speaker at March 2, 2002 Human Rights Campaign dinner in Houston; keynote speaker at March 16, 2002 Human Rights Campaign dinner in Nashville.
