Montpelier  City of Montpelier
Located in the upper Winooski River valley, Montpelier was chartered in 1791 and selected as the state capital in 1805.  Montpelier is the nation's smallest state capital, with a population of slightly more than 8,000.  It is reportedly the only U.S. capital without a McDonald's.
