November 6, 2002. In his capacity as chair of the Democratic Governors' Association's recruitment committee, Gov. Howard Dean assessed the results of the mid-term elections in a press conference at DNC headquarters. Dean highlighted Democratic wins in Oklahoma, Kansas and Wyoming. "We have won places that I think nobody would have thought Democrats could win," he said. "Of all the things that were accomplished last night, even including Illinois and Pennsylvania and Michigan, which are obviously the three biggest states and very, very important to us, I think in my view the most significant thing that we did last night is to begin to make erosions that we need to make back in the heartland of this country, which is going to set us up for 2004," Dean said. In Dean's own state of Vermont, the Democratic candidate did not fare so well, as State Treasurer Jim Douglas (R) narrowly defeated Lt. Gov. Doug Racine (D) by 44.9 percent to 42.4 percent to secure the governorship. |
