Aug. 14, 1991 to Jan. 9, 2003. Dean assumed office upon the death
of then-Gov. Richard Snelling, was elected five times and opted not to
seek re-election in 2002:
Re-elected in 2000 [H.Dean (D) 50.4%, R.Dwyer (R) 37.9%, A.Pollina (Prog.) 9.5%]. Re-elected in 1998 [H.Dean (D) 55.6%, R.Dwyer (R) 41.1%]. Re-elected in 1996 [H.Dean (D) 70.5%, J.Gropper (R) 22.4%]. Re-elected in 1994 [H.Dean (D) 68.6%, D.Kelley (R) 19.0%]. Elected in 1992 [H.Dean (D) 74.7%, J.McClaughry (R) 23.0%]. Chair of the National Governors' Association, 1994-1995; chair of the Democratic Governors Association in 1997. Elected lieutenant governor in 1986.
