**Governor Howard Dean, Democrat, of Burlington, Vermont**.
Current	Full-time candidate for President of the United States since January 9, 2003. Dean mailed the FEC papers establishing Dean for America, a presidential campaign committee on May 30, 2002. Earlier, on November 8, 2001, he formed a leadership political action committee, the Fund for a Healthy America.

Career	Governor of Vermont from Aug. 14, 1991 to Jan. 9, 2003. Dean assumed office upon the death of then-Gov. Richard Snelling, was elected five times and opted not to seek re-election in 2002: Re-elected in 2000 [H.Dean (D) 50.4%, R.Dwyer (R) 37.9%, A.Pollina (Prog.) 9.5%]. Re-elected in 1998 [H.Dean (D) 55.6%, R.Dwyer (R) 41.1%]. Re-elected in 1996 [H.Dean (D) 70.5%, J.Gropper (R) 22.4%]. Re-elected in 1994 [H.Dean (D) 68.6%, D.Kelley (R) 19.0%]. Elected in 1992 [H.Dean (D) 74.7%, J.McClaughry (R) 23.0%]. Chair of the National Governors' Association, 1994-1995; chair of the Democratic Governors Association in 1997. Elected lieutenant governor in 1986. Elected to the Vermont House of Representatives in 1982 and served through 1986; elected assistant majority leader in 1985. Opened an internal medicine practice with his wife in Shelburne, Vermont in 1981.

Education	Bachelor's degree, Yale University, 1971. MD, Albert Einstein College of Medicine (New York City), 1978. Residency at Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. Dean began his political career during his medical residency, serving as a volunteer on Jimmy Carter's re-election campaign.

Family	Wife Dr. Judith Steinberg, a full-time practicing physician. Two children.

Religion	Congregational.

Age	Born Nov. 17, 1948 in New York City; father a stockbrocker and mother an art appraiser; grew up in East Hampton.

Activities	Outdoors--skiing, hiking, canoeing, sailing. Plays guitar.
