the Cub Club at Sec Taylor Stadium.

2003. On February 17 he had lunch with seniors at Elsie
Mason Manor in Des Moines; addressed the Inner City Community Alliance
at the Willkie House in Des Moines; spoke at the Iowa Federation of Labor's
Annual Legislative Conference at Adventureland Inn in Altoona; and stopped
in at the Warren County Off-Year Caucus event at Indianola Masonic Temple.
On February 18 he attended a breakfast reception with Linn County
activists at Coopers Mill Restaurant (in the Best Western Hotel) in Cedar
Rapids.
2002: 4 visits, 9 days.
Sen. Edwards made a significant
investment of time and resources in Iowa in 2001-2002. His six visits
were second only to Governor Howard Dean and President Bush. Edwards
assiduously courted colleague Tom Harkin, serving as a surrogate speaker
at a number of events for him. The Optimists was heavily involved
in Iowa, making a total investment of about $288,000 including an in-kind
contribution of 123 computers, 45 different literature pieces for 56 different
candidates around the state, and purchase of the voter file. IDP
vice chair Rob Tully was a prominent Edwards supporter in this pre-campaign
period.
-Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on October 5-6, 2002.
After stopping in Ottawa, Ill. to address the Region IV United Auto Workers
meeting, he arrived in Des Moines for the Iowa Democratic Party's Jefferson
Jackson Dinner at the Polk County Convention Complex; he spoke at the three
pre-JJ receptions and the dinner. Edwards stayed overnight at Terrace
Hill, the governor's mansion, as the guest of Gov. Tom Vilsack and his
wife. On October 6, he traveled to Cedar Rapids with Sen.
Tom Harkin for a pre-debate rally before returning to Washington.
-Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on August 16-18,
2002. Arriving from Illinois late afternoon on August 16,
he did a fundraiser for 1st district congressional candidate Ann Hutchinson
at The Carriage Haus restaurant in Davenport and an evening rally with
Harkin supporters at a home in Clinton (serving as a surrogate for Harkin).
He overnighted in Iowa City, and on August 17, did a morning brunch/party
with Harkin supporters at a home in Iowa City (again as a surrogate for
Harkin), toured the Iowa Technology Center at Camp Dodge with Rep. Leonard
Boswell, did a reception with Sen. Bill Fink at the Fink Farm in Carlisle,
walked the
Iowa
State Fair in Des Moines with Rep. Dave Schrader, and attended a "Chicago
Cubs All Stars Reception & Dinner" fundraiser for State Rep. Frank
Chuido at a restaurant in Des Moines. On August 18 he attended
an Iowa Cubs baseball game, including a reception for the House and Senate
Caucus at Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines.
-Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on June 14-15, 2002.
[Note: Senators Harkin and Edwards shared the same flight to Des Moines
along with the political directors for ROCPAC and Leadership '02].
On June 14 he attended a Nat'l Comm. to Preserve Soc. Sec. and Medicare
awards ceremony for Sen. Tom Harkin in Des Moines and keynoted the Iowa
Democratic Party's Hall of Fame reception at the Polk County Convention
Center in Des Moines. [This is a fundraising event (tickets $50 each)
where awards are given to local Democrats; it is held the night before
the state convention and attracts many convention attendees]. On
the morning of June 15 Edwards visited the IDP's coordinated campaign
headquarters and stopped in at the state convention. [Although addressing
the convention is generally limited to Iowans, the crowd started
chanting as Edwards was making the rounds and the program was ahead of
schedule so he was given the opportunity to speak for a couple of minutes].
-Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on April 5-6,
2002. On April 5 he did an afternoon fundraiser for Sen.
Tom Harkin at the law office of C.J May III in Dubuque and delivered the
keynote speech at the Buchanan County Democrats' annual sustaining fund
banquet at the Sportsmen Restaurant in Oelwein. On the morning of
April
6 he did a small donor house party fundraiser for Harkin at a private
home in Waterloo.

-Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on December
14-15, 2001; he was the keynote speaker at a Quad City Federation of
Labor dinner at the Jumer Castle Lodge in Bettendorf (adj. to Davenport)
on December 14; on December 15 in Cedar Rapids he spoke to a group
of Harkin supporters at a private home and to labor activists at the UAW
hall.
-Sen. Edwards delivered the keynote address
at the Drake Law School's Annual Supreme Court Celebration banquet in Des
Moines,
