Speaking out against the Yucca Mountain nuclear repository
Washington, DC--May 8, 2002.  After the meeting of the House Democratic Caucus, Rep. Gephardt, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), Rep. Shelly Berkley (D, NV-1), Nevada 3rd congressional district candidate Dario Herrera and others spoke out against legislation that would make Yucca Mountain the nation's nuclear waste repository.  Later in the day the House passed the bill by a vote of 306-117.  A majority of Democrats voted against the bill, which still faced a vote in the Senate.
How well candidates such as Dario Herrera, fare on Nov. 5, 2002 will determine whether House Democratic Leader Gephardt is able to ascend to the speakership.  Herrera, who is chair of the Clark County Board of Commissioners, will face State Sen. Jon Porter (R) in the race for the newly created 3rd district seat.
