House Democrats Elect Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) As Their Leader
November 14, 2002.  Rep. Gephardt led House Democrats for eight years, ever since Newt Gingrich and Republicans swept to power in 1994, but after the disappointing results of the November 5, 2002 mid-term elections he announced in a statement that he was stepping down from the post.  "It's time for me personally to take a different direction, look at the country's challenge from a different perspective and take on this President and the Republican Party from a different vantage point," he stated.  Democrats overwhelmingly elected Rep. Nancy Pelosi (CA-8) to succeed Gephardt.
