and leafletting at plant gates. The Alliance held a number of rallies;
for example there was one at USWA Local 310 in Des Moines on the afternoon
of January 12, 2004 to mobilize for the final week. The Alliance
also ran some television ads in November and did some mailing. Most
active in the Alliance were the Teamsters, Steelworkers, Laborers and Ironworkers.
Brett Voorhies, who previously served as national legislative and political
coordinator for the United Steelworkers of America in Pittsburgh, directed
the effort starting around Labor Day.

2001-02 Iowa Activity by Gephardt's
Effective Government Committee
Gephardt's Effective Government Committee thoroughly
spread its wealth around in Iowa during the 2002 election cycle, particularly
in the closing weeks of the November 5, 2002 campaign. The EGC's
nonfederal pre-general report (covering Oct. 1-Oct. 16, 2002) showed the
PAC received two $100,000 contributions. EGC then turned around and
poured all of its contributions for the period, totalling $142,000, into
Iowa and New Hampshire races; $104,500 or over 73 percent of that amount
went directly to Iowa candidates. The nonfederal post-general report
(Oct. 17-Nov. 25, 2002) showed another $105,000, or about one quarter
of its total contributions for the period, went to Iowa candidates.
All told in 2001-02, the PAC put
over $300,000 behind Iowa candidates
and committees.

And...
-Vijay Uppal, who worked in Gephardt's Washington office
for a year and nine months as staff assistant and then assistant to chief
of staff Steve Elmendorf, left Gephardt's staff in May 2002 and went to
Iowa to run several state legislative campaigns in Fairfield (Jefferson
County). Lacking experience with campaign work, he'd been wanting
to try it for a while. He interviewed with Iowa Democratic Party
legislative director Scott Goodstein and started work in Fairfield in June.
-Jama Adams, a staff assistant in Gephardt's Washington
office, left the staff around Memorial Day 2002 and went to work for the
IDP as one of five Polk County field organizers.
-Most of the presidential prospects had representatives
on hand for the IDP state convention June 15, 2002 in Des Moines: Sen.
Edwards appeared in person; Matt Rodriguez (Effective Government Committee)
was present as were Joe Eyer (ROCPAC), Mona Mohib (Leadership '02), Jonathan
Parker (DASHPAC), and Harry Bookey (a Kerry supporter).
-Mike Glover, Associated Press, reported that Gephardt
recorded an auto call to boost turnout at the Feb. 11, 2002 precinct
caucuses. |
