Sen. Graham Visits Robie's Country Store on the Occasion of its Re-Opening ...2 of 8 >
Hooksett, NH, May 24, 2003--Robie's Country Store was for many years a traditional stop on the campaign trail in New Hampshire, run by four generations of the same family.  However, the owners advanced in years and the store largely closed down.  Now, proprietors Stephen Christou and Daniel Mitton, shown below inaugurating the cheese wheel, are running the store and continuing the tradition.
Excerpts from an interview with Stephen Christou:

This actually was my dream.  I wanted to do this when I was a  kid, a little kid...open up a deli/country store.  So basically I'm following my dream.  This is what I always wanted...

Both my business partner and myself, we're willing to go the extra nine yards to make it something for the community.  There isn't anything around this area that's quaint like this and offers...just good down-to-earth country people.

Did it take a lot of work to bring things up to speed and stock all the shelves and all that?

It did.  It was a lot of nights planning.

...There was a sign on the door, on the wall, that said for lease.  And we spoke to Robert Schroeder...president of Robie's Preservation Corp. and he and his board members suggested that we come up with a business plan.  So the business plan took quite a while...and there were eight other people that were interested in this building.  Everyone had different philosophies.  We were selected because we had the same philosophy as the Robies and as the corporation.

For instance the shelves that we have here.  This is all new shelving.  We looked out front to see the shelves, to replicate what was there.  So there's a lot of process in it.  My business partner Dan Mitton was the one that kind of designed [it] and even the colors and boards all had really some planning...

And we feature New Hampshire made products.  Our first room as you come in--there's three rooms--the first room is New Hampshire made products.  We live in New Hampshire and we wanted to support New Hampshire...
