Gov. Dean visited Iowa on December 16-18, 2002.  On the evening of December 16 he attended a reception at the home of  Dan and Marcia Rogers in Cedar Rapids.  On December 17 he met with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register in Des Moines (he announced his selection of Jeani Murray as state director) and late in the afternoon he attended a reception at The Homestead Building in Des Moines.  On December 18 he did an interview with the Ames Tribune in Ames.

Sen. Daschle made a brief stop in Iowa on December 14, 2002 on his way to South Dakota. He headlined the Quad Cities Labor Federation's Hall of Fame banquet in Bettendorf.

(Pres. Bush overnighted in Cedar Rapids).  On the morning of November 4, 2002, Pres. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush rallied with Republican candidates at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

Sen. Daschle campaigned with Sen. Tom Harkin during an October 28, 2002 visit to Iowa.
Stops included rallies the University of Iowa in Iowa City and at Iowa State University in Ames.

Former Sen. Bradley campaigned with congressional candidate John Norris on October 19, 2002.

Former Vice President Gore visited Iowa on October 14-15, 2002.  On October 14 he breakfasted in Dubuque; attended a fundraiser for 1st district congressional candidate Ann Hutchinson at the Brickhouse Brewery Complex in Dubuque; attended an activist meeting with 2nd district congressional candidate Julie Thomas at Cornell College in Mount Vernon; attended a GOTV rally followed by a reception with Thomas at the University of Iowa's Memorial Union in Iowa City; and visited the Iowa Democrats' coordinated campaign headquarters in Des Moines.  On October 15 he attended a labor breakfast with Rep. Leonard Boswell at Carpenters Union Hall in Des Moines; attended an education forum with Boswell at Des Moines Area Community College in Des Moines; attended a GOTV rally with 4th district congressional candidate John Norris at Iowa State University in Ames; and attended a Norris fundraiser at Prime-in-Wine Restaurant in Mason City.  He then headed to Milwaukee.

Gov. Dean visited Iowa on October 9-10, 2002.  (In the morning of October 9 he did a healthcare roundtable with Nebraska gubernatorial candidate Stormy Dean in Omaha, NE).  In the early afternoon, he, along with Mike Reasoner, candidate for Iowa House (District 95), spoke to an American politics class at Graceland College in Lamoni; he then did a meet and greet/reception at the College with students, faculty and community members.  Later in the afternoon Dean, along with Howard Hart, candidate for Iowa House (District 97) and Paul Shomshor, candidate for Congress, did meet and greets with local activists at Lied Center Community Center in Calinda and at Shenandoah Elementary School in Shenandoah.  In the evening he attended an AFSCME- and labor-sponsored reception for Doug Struyk and Steve Gorman, candidates for Iowa House (Districts 99 and 98), at Firefighter's Hall in Council Bluffs.  On the morning of October 10 he campaigned with Shomshor, then headed back to Omaha, NE.

Sen. Edwards, Gov. Dean, and Sen. Kerry spoke at the Iowa Democratic Party's Jefferson Jackson Dinner at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines on October 5, 2002.
Sen. Edwards stayed overnight at Terrace Hill, the governor's mansion, as the guest of Gov. Tom Vilsack and his wife.  On October 6, 2002 he traveled to Cedar Rapids with Sen. Tom Harkin for a pre-debate rally before returning to Washington.

Gov. Dean visited Iowa on September 23-24, 2002.  On the afternoon of September 23 he started in Cedar Rapids: campaigning with John Hedgecoth, candidate for state representative (District 37) and Renee Sneitzer, candidate for state Senate (District 19)--working a downtown lunch spot and a senior center, and doing some fundraising calls for Hedgecoth; and holding a press conference with 2nd district congressional candidate Julie Thomas at Johnson Elementary School.  In the evening, he did three events in Iowa City: attending a fundraising reception for Thomas at a private home; attending a fundraising reception for University of Iowa Young Democrats at the University of Iowa; and addressing students in the 2nd Floor Ballroom of the Memorial Union at the University of Iowa.  On September 24 he started the day with a breakfast for Mark Shear, candidate for state Senate, at Kolonial Town House in Kalona; campaigned with Keith Kreiman, candidate for state Senate at Hotel Ottumwa in Ottumwa; did a lunch for Julie Thomas at Regina's Restaurant in Fairfield; interviewed at the Hawk Eye newspaper in Burlington; did a press conference with Pat Deluhery, candidate for State Auditor, and John Reissan, candidate for state representative, in Burlington; met with the co-chairs of Muscatine County; and concluded with a dinner for Deluhery in Davenport.

Pres. Bush visited Iowa on September 16, 2002.  After arriving at Quad-City International Airport (Moline, Ill.), he proceeded to Davenport, where he spoke on budget discipline and fiscal restraint at Sears Manufacturing Company and then was the featured guest at a fundraiser for Rep. Jim Nussle in the Starlite Ballroom at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds.

Gov. Dean visited Iowa on September 4-7, 2002.  His schedule included:  September 4 in Des Moines private meetings with ISEA president John Hieronymus, with people from AFSCME, and with Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge; he attended anearly evening fundraiser for Vilsack-Pederson hosted by Planned Parenthood in Des Moines. September 5 breakfast for Jeanette Randall, candidate for Iowa House (District 23), and Buchanan County Democrats at the Independence Senior Center in Independence; lunch for Roger Thomas, candidate for Iowa House (District 24), at Guttenburg River Cafe in Guttenburg, followed by visit to Clayton Ridge High School; dinner for Pat Tyler, candidate for Iowa Senate, at the Red Fox Inn in Waverly; reception for Ann Hutchinson, 1st district congressional candidate, in Waterloo.  September 6 breakfast for John Norris, 4th district congressional candidate, at Fisher Community Center in Marshalltown, followed by a press event there; brunch for Rep. Mark Smith at the Otts' home in Marshalltown; speak at the United Auto Workers convention at the Starlight Hotel in Des Moines; reception for Jo Oldson, candidate for House (District 61), at N Haus Foto in Des Moines; event with Norris on keeping drug companies accountable at Ames Public Library; reception for Norris in Boone; reception for Norris in Ft. Rep. Gephardt visited Iowa on August 14-16, 2002.  On August 14 he and Sen. Harkin attended the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, then went to Cedar Rapids, then back to Des Moines to do fundraising with Harkin.  On August 15 he did a Social Security forum with Rep. Boswell at the Knoxville Senior Center in Knoxville; campaigned with 2nd district congressional candidate Julie Thomas in Ottumwa (discussion of corporate accountability at UAW Local 74) and Fairfield (rally at local Democratic office, followed by visit to LISCO, an Internet service company covering Southeast Iowa); and concluded the day with a fundraiser with 1st district congressional candidate Ann Hutchinson at a home in Bettendorf.  On August 16 he did a breakfast with Hutchinson at a home in Maquoketa and a lunch with Hutchinson at the 3100 Club in Dubuque.

Sen. Lieberman campaigned with candidates in Iowa on August 14-15, 2002.  On August 14 he did a breakfast fundraiser for Ann Hutchinson at the Isle of Capri convention center in Bettendorf and a Social Security event with Hutchinson at the Center for Active Seniors in Davenport.  He did a lunch fundraiser for Julie Thomas in Cedar Rapids and a corporate responsibility roundtable with Thomas at Brewed Awakenings Coffee Shop in Cedar Rapids.  He visited the Iowa State Fair with Governor Tom Vilsack and did a dinner event for Vilsack in Des Moines.  On August 15 he did an event for the House/Senate Truman Fund in Des Moines and a homeland security event at Des Moines airport.

Pres. Bush visited Iowa on August 14, 2002.  He spoke at the Iowa State Fair and then spoke at a fundraising dinner for Gross/Durham ticket at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines.

Rep. Kucinich delivered the keynote at the Iowa AFL-CIO State Convention dinner on August 14, 2002.  He was in state on August 15 as well.

Gov. Dean visited Iowa on July 15-16, 2002.  On July 15 he began in Omaha, Neb. (breakfast with state Democratic party leaders, activists and labor leaders) and then did events in Sioux City, Iowa: met with Iowa State Education Association, did a press conference with 5th district congressional candidate Paul Shomshor, followed by a meet and greet with county chair Al Sturgeon Jr. and Democratic candidates and activists from Woodbury County, and concluded with a press availability and reception with Shomshor.  On July 16 he began with a live radio interview with Mark Stubbs on KMNS, News Talk 620 AM in Sioux City, then headed to Council Bluffs, where he and Shomshor toured Alegent Health Systems (hospital), held a press conference there and then did a fundraiser for Shomshor.

Mid-Year 2002:  6 potential Democratic candidates made 11 visits totaling 17 days: Dean-5 visits for 8 days; Edwards-2 visits for 4 days; Gephardt-1 visit for 2 days; Kerry, Daschle and Sharpton-each 1 visit for 1 day.

Sen. Kerry visited Iowa on June 29, 2002.  He campaigned for 4th district congressional candidate John Norris at a house party in Ackworth, did a rally with 2nd district congressional candidate Dr. Julie Thomas at SEIU Local 199 Hall in Coralville (Iowa City), did a Truman Fund reception at a home in Cedar Rapids, and did a Truman Fund fundraiser at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids (one event was for $50-$500 donors and the other was a "low dollar event" for a suggested contribution of $20).

Gov. Dean visited Iowa on June 24-26, 2002.  On June 24 he did a private lunch with a small group of Democratic activists at the Raddison Hotel in Davenport; met with Ed Tibbetts of the Quad-City Times; met with Clinton County Democratic activists at the Democratic headquarters in Clinton and attended a reception hosted by La Metta K. Wynn, Mayor of Clinton, at City Hall.   On June 25 he was in Des Moines for various private meetings-breakfast with Dave Neil, UAW president; meeting with JoAnn Zimmerman, first female lt. gov. of Iowa; meeting with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register; lunch with First Lady Christie Vilsack; meeting with Attorney General Tom Miller.  He attended a Stonewall meet and greet event at the Plaza and was guest speaker at a reception for Angela Connolly, candidate for Polk County Supervisor, at the home of Mary Tabor and Phil Roeder in Des Moines.   On June 26 he did a breakfast event with Maggie Stewart and Black Hawk County Democrats at Country Kitchen in Waterloo; was special guest at a reception for Jeff Danielson, candidate for Iowa House of Representatives, District 20 (Waterloo); did an interview with Charlotte Eby, managing editor of the Courier; proceeded to Cedar Rapids and was special guest at at Linn County Phoenix Club fundraiser at the home of Bob Rush; and special guest at a Linn County Democrats Central Committee meeting at UAW 104 Hall.

Sen. Daschle visited Iowa on June 23, 2002 and did two events: the annual fundraising picnic for Gov. Tom Vilsack and Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson in Mt. Pleasant (Henry County-SE Iowa) and a fundraising barbeque for Sen. Tom Harkin in the Altoona area (10 miles east of Des Moines).

Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on June 14-15, 2002.   [Note: Senators Harkin and Edwards shared the same flight to Des Moines along with the  political directors for ROCPAC and Leadership '02].  On June 14 he attended a Nat'l Comm. to Preserve Soc. Sec. and Medicare awards ceremony for Sen. Tom Harkin in Des Moines and keynoted the Iowa Democratic Party's Hall of Fame reception at the Polk County Convention Center in Des Moines.  [This is a fundraising event (tickets $50 each) where awards are given to local Democrats; it is held the night before the state convention and attracts many convention attendees].  On the morning of June 15 Edwards visited the IDP's coordinated campaign headquarters and stopped in at the state convention.  [Although addressing the convention is generally limited to Iowans,  the crowd started chanting as Edwards was making the rounds and the program was ahead of schedule so he was given the opportunity to speak for a couple of minutes]. 

On June 7, 2002, the one-year anniversary of his signing of the tax cut bill and the day after announcing plans for a department of homeland security, Pres. Bush spoke and ate lunch at the World Pork Expo at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa, then headed back to Washington.

-On May 21-22, 2002, Gov. Dean visited Des Moines, Iowa.  On the evening of May 21 he spoke at a fundraiser for the Senate Truman Fund at Salisbury House in Des Moines.  This was the publicized event; the trip was mostly private meetings: May 21-lunch at veteran Dem. activist Phil Roeder's office; Mike Blouin, president of the Greater Des Moines Partnership and Richard "Red" Brennan, a consultant; Marti Anderson and Barbara Boatwright, activists for DAWN; Mike Tackett; Debbie Katterhorn and Leslie Place, co-presidents of Iowa Young Democrats; Eric Tabor, chief of staff to AG Tom Miller.  May 22 breakfast with Dave Neil, UAW president; Secretary of State Chet Culver; lunch with Howard Hagen and attorneys in his firm.

-On May 6-7, 2002 Gov. Dean visited Iowa.  Dean met privately with Sen. Pat Deluhery at the airport and then had lunch with him at the Rusty Nail in Davenport.  He met with the editorial board of the Quad-City Times.  Dean met privately with Mary Ellen Chamberlin, president of the Riverboat Development Authority.  Proceeding to Iowa City  he met with the Gazette's James Lynch.  He met with Univ. of Iowa law professor Josie Gittler.  He spoke at the First Annual Nurses' Speak Out, sponsored by the Iowa City Nurse Coalition, at the Iowa City Public Library.  Dean finished the day at a fundraiser for Iowa Democrats' Truman Fund (House Democratic Caucus) at the home of Rep. Dick Myers.  On May 7 Dean had breakfast with Pat McCabe.  He spent the morning in Fairfield, holding meetings at Ernie Robson's office, touring town hall and downtown with Mayor Ed Malloy, meeting Mayor Bob Wynne and city council members at Vedic City (two miles north of Fairfield), and doing a lunch reception at Regina's Restaurant.  [The Nurses' Speak Out and the Truman Fund fundraiser were the major highlighted events on this trip].

On tax day, April 15, 2002, Pres. Bush visited Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  He spoke to "workers who are benefiting from the tax relief plan" at the General Mills plant and did a fundraising dinner at the convention center for GOP Senate candidate Rep. Greg Ganske.

Rep. Gephardt visited Iowa on April 11-12, 2002.  On April 11 in Des Moines he did a couple of fundraisers for state Senate candidate Chuck Gifford, one at a private home and the other at Best Western Starlite Village. (Gifford, running in a contested Democratic primary, met Gephardt in 1987 when he was leader of the United Auto Workers Union in Iowa; he and the union backed the Missouri congressman's 1988 presidential run).   On April 12, Gephardt, Gov. Vilsack, Lt. Gov. Pederson and Rep. Leonard Boswell participated in an event on special education funding at Hanawalt Elementary School in Des Moines.   He next headed east to campaign with 2nd district congressional candidate Julie Thomas in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.   In Cedar Rapids, the two visited the Quaker Oats plant, met with labor leaders at Teamsters Hall and did an evening rally at IBEW Hall; they then rallied at Eagles Lodge in Iowa City.

Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on April 5-6, 2002.  On April 5 he did an afternoon fundraiser for Sen. Harkin at the law office of C.J May III in Dubuque and delivered the keynote speech at the Buchanan County Democrats' annual sustaining fund banquet at the Sportsmen Restaurant in Oelwein.  On the morning of April 6 he did a small donor house party fundraiser for Harkin at a private home in Waterloo. 

Gov. Dean visited Des Moines, Iowa on March 27-28, 2002 to campaign for 4th district congressional candidate John Norris.  On the evening of March 27 he did a fundraiser for Norris at a private home; the next morning the two met with health care professionals at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.  On both days he held private meetings with Democratic activists, and he also met privately with Gov. Vilsack.

On a brief March 1, 2002 visit to Iowa, Pres. Bush spoke about retirement security at The Printer, Inc. in Des Moines and did a fundraising lunch for Rep. Tom Latham's re-election campaign and the Republican Party of Iowa.

Rev. Sharpton visited Des Moines, Iowa on February 26, 2002.  He breakfasted with local clergy at the Creative Visions Center, had lunch with officials and community leaders at Corinthian Baptist Church, spoke to students at Des Moines Area Community College's Urban Campus, and preached at Union Baptist Church. 

Gov. Dean visited Iowa on February 22, 2002.  He campaigned for 2nd district congressional candidate Julie Thomas in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.  The two began with a lunch with Johnson County business owners and attorneys at a downtown restaurant in Iowa City.  In the afternoon they met with law school professors; toured University of Iowa children's hospital with Dr. Frank Morris, hospital director; and met with UI president Mary Sue Coleman.  In the evening they did fundraisers for her campaign at a private home in Iowa City and at a private home in Cedar Rapids.

[Also note, on January 14, 2002 Pres. Bush toured the John Deere Harvester Works in Moline, Illinois, which is right across the river from Davenport/Bettendorf].
 

Sen. Edwards visited Iowa on December 14-15, 2001; he was the keynote speaker at a Quad City Federation of Labor dinner at the Jumer Castle Lodge in Bettendorf (adj. to Davenport) on December 14; on December 15 in Cedar Rapids he spoke to a group of Harkin supporters at a private home and to labor activists at the UAW hall.

Sen. Lieberman did brunch and dessert reception fundraisers for Sen. Harkin, followed by a Hanukkah event at Beth El Jacob Synagogue, all in Des Moines, during a brief visit to Iowa on December 9, 2001.

Sen. Feingold spoke at the University of Iowa in Iowa City on November 19, 2001.  This was the second appearance on his national College Tour, during which he is addressing the topic of "What We Can Do For Our Nation."

Former Vice President Gore delivered the keynote address at the Iowa Democratic Party's annual Jefferson-Jackson Day fundraising dinner at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines, Iowa on September 29, 2001.  This was intended to be Gore's first major big post-election political appearance, but in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon he instead delivered a call for unity.  On the Friday and Saturday before the speech, Gore traveled around Eastern Iowa in a rental car, meeting a few friends and supporters during several low-key, unannounced stops.  According to news accounts his route included: Sept. 28 Arrive Burlington, and coffee at Perkins Restaurant.  Davenport: lunch with party activists at the Davenport Square Family Restaurant.  Iowa City: visit Prairie Lights bookstore near the University of Iowa campus with Rep. Dick Myers.  Cedar Rapids: meet with Mayor Lee Clancey, visit the Islamic Center and mosque.  Sept. 29 Cedar Rapids: buy donuts for striking machinists in the Amanas and visit them on the picket line.  Blairstown (Benton County): stop at cafe.  Colo (Story County): visit the farm of Keith and Susan McKinney.  Ames: meet with friends at restaurant.  Des Moines: speech and overnight at Gov. Vilsack's residence.  (September 28-29, 2001).

Rep. Gephardt campaigned in Iowa for Rep. Leonard Boswell on July 20-21, 2001.  On the evening of July 20 he did a fundraiser at a Norwalk home; on July 21 he attended a pancake breakfast at the UAW hall in Newton and an ice cream social at Blank Park in Des Moines.

Sen. Kerry attended a fundraising picnic for Gov. Tom Vilsack and Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson at Old Thresher's Grounds in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa (Henry County-SE Iowa) on June 24, 2001.

Former Sen. Bradley visited Iowa on June 23, 2001.  He participated in a reception to benefit the House Truman Fund and the Johnson County Democratic Party at the home of House Democratic Leader Dick Meyers in Iowa City.  [Former Sen. Bradley attended the basketball camp at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, on the afternoon of Nov. 17, 2000.  He has done this event annually for a number of years.]

On June 8, 2001, one day after signing the tax cut bill, Pres. Bush spoke at a tax celebration event at the Barrett farm in Dallas Center, Iowa; he had visited the farm as a candidate in 1999.

Sen. Daschle visited Iowa on May 20-21, 2001.  On May 20 he attended a fundraiser for Sen. Tom Harkin at Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des Moines.  On May 21 he attended a lunch with activists in Cedar Rapids.

On May 18, 2001, in one of a series of events promoting his National Energy Policy, Pres. Bush spokeat the Iowa Energy Center in Nevada, Iowa.

Rep. Kaptur delivered a speech on "A New Declaration of Economic Independence for Rural America" to a farmer bargaining conference at Iowa State University in Ames and made a couple of other stops in an Iowa visit on March 16, 2001.

Sen. Edwards delivered the keynote address at the Drake Law School's Annual Supreme Court Celebration banquet in Des Moines, Iowa on March 3, 2001.

On February 28, 2001, one day after his first address to a Joint Session of Congress, Pres. Bush made a stop in Iowa as part of a five-state tour.  He spoke to a panel of about ninety people at a Leadership Forum in the Old Carnegie Library in Council Bluffs.
