Des Moines, Iowa. August 14, 2002--After being introduced by
Rep. Greg Ganske (in the front row on Bush's right wearing the blue shirt)
as "a real friend of ethanol," President Bush spoke
for about 28 minutes. He devoted the first part of his speech to
trade. "It's my job and the job of this administration, now that
I've got trade promotion authority to do everything we can to knock down
the barriers so you can be selling your products all over the world," Bush
said to applause. He then turned, following up on the economic summit
he had held in Waco the previous day, to the broader economy, including
tax relief. "I strongly urge the farmers and ranchers here and those
who own small businesses to demand that your elected representatives repeal
the death tax once and for all," Bush proclaimed. Finally, he addressed
the question of homeland security, calling for the Senate to give him needed
flexibility on the Department of Homeland Security. |
