August 17, 2002-Sen. Edwards arrives at the New American Optimists' reception for State Sen. Bill Fink at Fink Farm in Carlisle.  Fink is to Edwards's right and Fink's wife is to Edwards' left.  He has taught government and economics at Carlisle High School for 26 yearsand was first elected to the State Senate in 1992, defeating a Democratic incumbent.  The event came about through a conversation with New American Optimists' rural liaison Dave "Mudcat" Sauders.  Fink told Saunders, "You [Sen. Edwards] ever need a place to get toknow some Iowans, come on out."  Trailing the group is Iowa Democratic Party vice chair
Rob Tully.  "They needed someone to drive a car," Tully said.  Tully praised Edwards as "a
fresh face," "an articulate spokesperson," and "an incredibly affable, warm individual people are going to be able to relate to."  "John Edwards is a moderate Democrat with progressive ideas," he said.
