Rep. Gephardt Stumps with Candidates in Iowa   ...4 of 7 >>
August 15, 2002-Rep. Gephardt's next stop was a discussion on corporate accountability with congressional candidate Dr. Julie Thomas at UAW Local 74 in Ottumwa.  Thomas, who has worked as a pediatrician in Cedar Rapids for 27 years, is challenging Rep. Jim Leach in the 2nd district, which encompasses 15 counties in Southeast Iowa.  "She would be a wonderful member of the Congress," Gephardt said.  On the subject of corporate accountability, Gephardt recounted talking recently with someone who had lost almost all the money in his 401(k).  "I've lost trust in the information that investors have to depend on," the man had told him.  "We need to solve that problem," Gephardt said.  Referring to President Bush's recent economic summit in Waco, Gephardt said, "I don't think we need PR shows today."  Below, after the discussion Gephardt talks with Rick Boer, a welder and departmental steward at the nearby John Deere plant.  "I like what he had to say," said Boer.
