Iowa Surrogate Activity and Other Highlights

2004
-Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia is scheduled to visit Iowa on January 16-19, 2004, his third trip.
On the evening of January 16 he planned a veteran activist event at American Legion Monahan Post 64 in Sioux City.
On January 17 he planned breakfast with veterans at 501 Gordon Drive in Sioux City; and veteran activist events at Cronck's Restaurant & Lounge in Denison; at Shelby County Museum in Harlan; at VFW Post 737 in Council Bluffs; [and attending the Harry S Truman Awards Dinner (and the pre-reception) at Holiday Inn Central in Omaha, NE].
On January 18 he planned three veteran activist events--at Sam's Sodas & Sandwiches in Carroll; at AmVets Club in Rockwell; and at the VFW Hall in Jefferson.
On January 19 he planned a veterans activist breakfast at Perry Public Library in Perry; a veterans activist luncheon at Northside Cafe in Winterset; meeting with volunteers and call time at the Marshalltown field office at 107 S. 3rd Street; a veterans GOTV event at the VFW hall in Jefferson; and attended the Kerry caucus night party at Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des Moines.
 

-Stepson Chris Heinz is scheduled to visit Iowa on January 16-19, 2004.  He led an RV Road Tour of colleges and universities.  Special guests including the E Street Band's Max Weinburg, guitarist Tom DeLonge from Blink 182, Kelly Scott from MTV's the "Real World," and Scott Wolf, who played Bailey in "Party of Five," joined Heinz at many of the the stops which were sometimes on the campuses and sometimes at nearby restaurants.  The schedule: 
January 16 - Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids; Coe College in Cedar Rapids; Clarke College in Dubuque (with Kerry); University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.
January 17 - Wartburg College in Waverly, Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls; Iowa State University in Ames.
January 18 - Drake University in Des Moines; Simpson College in Indianola; watch football game at Zimm's in Des Moines; Grinnell College in Grinnell; rally with Kerry at Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. 
 

-Former Sen. Bob Kerry campaigned for Kerry at Carter Lake Public Library in Carter Lake (Council Bluffs), Iowa on the evening of January 15, 2004.
 

-Teresa Heinz Kerry is scheduled to visit Iowa on January 14-19, 2004
Early on the evening of January 14 she planned a roundtable conversation with undecided voters in Keokuk.
On January 15 she planned a conversation with caucus-goers at Ivy Bake Shop in Fort Madison; a discussion with activists and undecided voters  at the Barn Swallow in Burlington; and a caucus-goers event in the Efpy-McCurdy classroom at Iowa Wesley College in Mt. Pleasant.
On January 16 she planned a conversation with caucus-goers at the Ruby Elephant in Kalona; a roundtable with undecided caucus-goers at Muscatine Books and More; and a discussion with caucus-goers at Sunrise Golf Course Clubhouse in Bettendorf. 
On January 17 , joined by Iowa First Lady Christine Vilsack, she did a conversation with caucus-goers at Betty’s Bread Basket in Manchester; held a discussion with undecided caucus-goers at Jones County Senior Center in Anamosa; and held a roundtable discussion with caucus-goers at Municipal Building in West Branch. 
On January 18 she attended a caucus-goers event at The Saint’s Rest Coffee House in Grinnell.  (other events this day were cancelled).
On January 19 she joined her husband.
 

-Congresswoman Millender-McDonald is scheduled to campaign for Sen. Kerry in Iowa on January 11-12, 2004.  On January 11 in Des Moines she plans a roundtable conversation with "Sisters on Target"; and will attend the Brown & Black Forum at the Polk County Convention Center.  On January 12 she plans a conversation with caucus-goers over coffee at the Old Capitol Mall; a luncheon discussion with activists in Cedar Rapids; adn a meeting with ministers at Famous Dave's Restaurant in Davenport.
 

-Daughter Vanessa Kerry is scheduled to visit Iowa on the afternoon and evening of January 7, 2004.  She plans a roundtable discussion with students and professors at Wartburg College in Waverly; a visit with activits at Bellevue Community Center in Bellevue; and a "pub crawl" in downtown Dubuque with stops at The Busted Lift and Bricktown Brewery & Restaurant.
 

-Former Ambassador Joe Wilson is scheduled to visit Iowa on January 7-8, 2004.  On January 7 he plans a roundtable conversation with voters at Council Bluffs Public Library; and an event with anti-war activists and others at the home of Carolyn Raffensperger and Fred Kircshenmann in Ames. On the morning of January 8 he plans a coffee with activists at the Kerry field office in Newton.
 

-Teresa Heinz Kerry is scheduled to visit Iowa starting on January 3, 2004.  On January 3 she plans to do an event with activists at The Boyd Building in Shell Rock; an event with activists at the home of Gloria Goll in Klemme; and an event with activists at Docks Restaurant in Clear Lake.  On January 4 she plans to do an event with activists at Lula's Restaurant in Osage; an event with activists in Northwood; and an event with activists at The Lodge in Forest City.  On January 5 she plans to join her husband for the event with women supporters at Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des Moines. 
 

-National Veterans Coordinator John Hurley and Wade Sanders, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy, kicked off a series of Veterans for Kerry events in Iowa, screening the documentary Brothers in Arms (directed by Paul Alexander, produced by the Gordon Motion Picture Company) in Marshalltown, Iowa on January 3, 2004.
 

2003
-Teresa Heinz Kerry is scheduled to campaign for Kerry in Iowa on December 31, 2003.  She plans to do an event with activists at Greatest Grains in Davenport; do an event with activists at the Kerry campaign office in Clinton; do an event with activists at the home of Bob Rush in Cedar Rapids; and join Sen. Kerry for the New Year's Eve Party at Sioux City Community Theater.
 

-Teresa Heinz Kerry is scheduled to campaign for Kerry in Iowa on December 20-23, 2003.  Early on the evening of December 20 she plans to attend a women's reception at the home of Mike and Connie Gronstal in Council Bluffs.  On December 21 she plans to do an event with Democrats at Mickel's Family Restaurant in Harlan; an event with Democrats at the home of Hope Thelander in Onawa; and event with Democrats at the home of Lenee Sinnott in Ida Grove; and an event with Democrats at Adams Street Bed and Breakfast in Carroll.  On December 22 she plans lunch with Democrats at Old Park Hotel Community Center in Audubon; a roundtable with women at the Hotel Patee in Perry; an event with Democrats at the home of Tom and Karen Polking in Jefferson; and a reception with Democrats at Tea Thyme at Sadie's in Fort Dodge.  On the morning of December 23 she plans an event with Democrats at Second Street Emporium in Webster City.
 

-Teresa Heinz Kerry is scheduled to campaign for Kerry in Iowa on December 12-14, 2003.  On the evening of December 12 she plans to attend a woman's cocktail reception at the home of Jean Lloyd Jones in Iowa City.  On December 13 she plans an event with Democrats at Myers Catering Restaurant in Williamsburg; a women's event at Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg; and plans to attend a cocktail reception at Waterloo Center for the Arts in Waterloo.  On December 14 she plans to have lunch with Luther College students and environmentalists at Vesterheim Norwegian- American Museum in Decorah; attend a women's event at Gus and Tony’s in Waukon; and attend a women's cocktail reception at the home of Teri Goodman in Dubuque.
 

-Former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia is scheduled to campaign for Kerry in Iowa on December 11-12, 2003.  On December 11 he plans events with veterans and local Democrats at VFW Post No. 3519 in Knoxville; at VFW Post No. 1856 in Fort Dodge; and at the Rose Bowl in Mason City.  On December 12 he plans events with veterans and local Democrats at Star Family Restaurant in Cedar Falls; at Falcon Civic Center in Independence; an event with nurses at the home of Teri Murphy in Dubuque; and an event with veterans and local Democrats at the Eagle's Club in Dubuque.
 

-Congressman Barney Frank is scheduled to campaign for Kerry in Iowa on December 5-7, 2003.  On the evening of December 5 he plans to attend an activist event at the home of Brent Wynja in Ames.  Starting at mid-day on December 6 he plans to have lunch with Democratic activists at Paradise Pizza Café in West Des Moines; attend an activist reception at Grinnell College; and attend an activist reception at Fitzpatrick's in Iowa City.  On December 7 he plans to have brunch with Democratic activists at the home of Peggy Whitworth in Cedar Rapids; and do an event at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.
 

-Former Ambassador Joe Wilson campaigned for Kerry in Iowa on November 21-22, 2003.  On November 21 he did meet and greet with students at Coe College in Cedar Rapids; and did an event with Johnson County Democrats at Thai Flavors Restaurant in Iowa City.  On November 22 he did meet and greet with students at Grinnell College; and had lunch with Drake students and Polk County Democrats at Beggar's Restaurant in Des Moines.
 

-Stepson Chris Heinz campaigned in Iowa on November 14-16, 2003.  On November 14 he participated in the Iowa City Press-Citizen forum at Coralville Public Library; did meet and greet with students at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon; and did happy hour at The Summit in Iowa City.  On November 15 he met up for a "Kerry Van" to the JJ Dinner at Terrapin Coffee Shop in Coralville; and attended the JJ Dinner and related events in Des Moines.  On November 16 he dropped by the Boone City Firehouse; had lunch with Democrats at the Colorado Grille in Boone; held a roundtable with student leaders at MU at Iowa State University in Ames; held an environommental discussion at the home of Joe and Sue Roberts in Ankeny; and did meet and greet with Drake University students at Cool Beans, the student coffee shop, in Des Moines.
 

-Former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia campaigned for Sen. Kerry in Iowa on November 4-5, 2003.
On afternoon of November 4 he lunched with veterans and Democrats at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 775 in Ottumwa; met with veterans and Democrats at American Legion Post No 69 in Osceola; and dropped by the Kerry headquarters on Locust Street in Des Moines.  On November 5 he mixed and mingled at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown; met with veterans leadership at VFW Post No 788 in Cedar Rapids; and did a reception with veterans leadership at Hickory Garden Family Restaurant in Davenport. 
 

-Daughter Vanessa Kerry and stepson Chris Heinz visited Iowa on October 11-13, 2003 to kick off the "Kerry Dorm Storm."  On October 11 they met with students at Simpson College in Indianola; Central College in Pella; and Grinnell College in Grinnell; and wrapped up the day at the Jasper County Soup Supper at UAW Local 997 in Newton.  On October 12 they had lunch with Des Moines University Medical Students at the 3000 Grand Apartment Complex in Des Moines; and attended the Webster County Fall Dinner at the Eagle Restaurant in Fort Dodge.  On October 13 they met with students at Iowa Valley Community College in Iowa Falls; and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.
 

-The campaign started running TV ads in Iowa on September 3, 2003.
 

-The campaign opened its Iowa headquarters at 1500 Locust St. in downtown Des Moines in the last week of Feb. 2003.

-Most of the presidential prospects had representatives on hand for the IDP state convention June 15, 2002 in Des Moines.  Harry Bookey, a Kerry supporter who is managing partner of BH Equities, Inc. in Des Moines, showed the flag for the Massachusetts Senator.  [Sen. Edwards appeared in person, and political directors for other leading prospects were present: Joe Eyer (ROCPAC), Mona Mohib (Leadership '02), Jonathan Parker (DASHPAC), and Matt Rodriguez (Effective Government Committee)].
