Announcing Legislation to Protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
March 5, 2003--Sen. Lieberman announced legislation to designate the coastal plain of ANWR as wilderness.  The move would preclude oil exploration as advocated by the Bush administration.  Lieberman said that drilling in ANWR would produce at best a six month supply of oil ten years from now.  He also cited a National Academies' National Research Council report released today detailing cumulative effects of oil and gas exploration on Alaska's North Slope. Joining Lieberman were Sens. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Gene Karpinski, executive director of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.
