April 17, 2003--Campaign Director Craig Smith has a modest office in
Lieberman for President's new headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia; the campaign
moved in on March 31. Smith talked about the progress of the Lieberman
campaign:
Every campaign goes through cycles, and there's a constant building... We're just completing the development of the infrastructure: getting the people in the states, getting people in Iowa and New Hampshire, getting the finance offices set up. That's almost done. We've got a few more details in some of the offices, the regional offices, to get done, but that should be done within the week. And then it's a question of going out there and making the sale, closing the deal, and getting the voters on board. He also addressed the challenge of running a presidential campaign: It's the whipsaw effect you get from one minute having to deal with the meta-picture of how are we going to position ourselves in this debate, and the next minute it's call on a state rep. in Iowa and going please be for us, and the next minute it's review the communications department policy over who gets BlackBerries. You're just all over. I guess that's the job. It's the ultimate in multi-tasking is trying to run one of these things. ...What you're doing is you're making up out of whole cloth a national organization with a budget of $25 million, with a staff of 150 people in a year's time. |
