(announced May 29, 2003)  Elected Lieutenant Governor in 1998 and re-elected in 2002.  Elected to the Assembly in a special election in 1993, Bustamante became Speaker in 1996.  A native of San Joaquin, Calif.
 
 
 
Senior Advisor Garry South
(announced June 6, 2003)  Campaign manager for California Governor Gray Davis' 1998 and 2002 campaigns.  (The American Association of Political Consultants named South "Campaign Manager of the Year" in 1999.) Senior advisor to the Gore/Leberman California campaign in 2000.  Managed Davis' 1994 campaign for lieutenant governor.  South has been a political strategist for over 30 years.  He was communications director to Ohio Gov. Richard F. Celeste and Midwest Regional Finance Director of the DNC.  He served in the Department of Agriculture during the Carter Administration.  Robert Scheer, Los Angeles Times contributing editor, described South as "Davis' hatchet man" in a March 13, 2001 column (>); writer David Podvin opined in a January 2003 piece (>) that, "In many ways, South is the Democratic Karl Rove."
