Cheesesteak Proves a Mouthful
Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank's account of Sen. John Kerry's encounter with a cheesesteak at Pat's
Steaks in South Philadelphia on August 11, 2003 ("Steak Raises Stakes for Kerry in Philly"--August 13, 2003),
was widely circulated.  The Republican National Committee's research department even e-mailed out the
article "in case you missed it..."  Milbank wrote that Kerry had committed several faux pas, ordering Swiss
cheese instead of Cheese Whiz and "nibbling daintily" at the sandwich.  He quoted Craig LaBan, the
Philadelphia Inquirer's food critic, stating, "It will doom his candidacy in Philadelphia."
