The Food Corner

Junk Food
On a visit with parents at the Adult Learning Center in Nashua, NH on December 4, 2003, Sen. Lieberman announced a plan to limit junk food marketing to children, in an effort to address "the broad and growing obesity crisis in our country."

He pledged to launch an FTC investigation into junk food marketing to children; develop standards for the disclosure of relevant nutritional information in advertisements of foods that are routinely marketed to children; prevent junk food sales in public schools; and require nutrition labeling for chain restaurants.

The plan is part of Lieberman's Valuing Families Agenda.

The Washington Post helpfully recalled that Lieberman had downed a deep-fried Twinkie at the Iowa State Fair in August.  The paper quoted spokesman Jano Cabrera, "Lieberman was young. Mistakes were made."
