Overview: Held in conjunction with
the South Carolina Democratic Party's Dem Weekend 2003, this was the first
debate of the 2004 candidates.
Candidates: Carol Moseley Braun, Howard Dean, John Edwards, Dick Gephardt, Bob Graham, John Kerry, Dennis Kucinich, Joseph Lieberman, Al Sharpton. Moderator: ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos. Audience: Tickets distributed by the South Carolina Democratic Party, ABC News, the campaigns, and the University of South Carolina. Format: Four parts -- (i) 45 minutes of open discussion directed by Stephanopoulos; (ii) each candidate asks a question of one of the other candidates; (iii) Stephanopoulos asks a question of each candidate; (iv) closing statements. Broadcast:
C-SPAN; South Carolina Educational Television; about 59 ABC network affiliates,
following late local news.
