J U L Y
-Rep. Gephardt is scheduled to visit SC on July 24-25, 2003.  On the evening of July 24 he plans to attend a meet and greet at Allen Temple's Family Life Center in Greenville.  On July 25 he plans three events in Charleston: attend a meet and greet at the International Longshoreman Union headquarters; tour the Franklin C. Fetter Family Health Center; and attend a health care roundtable with health care professionals at Ebenezer AME Church.

-Sen. Edwards is scheduled to visit SC on July 22, 2003.  He plans to open his South Carolina campaign headquarters at 508 Gervais Street in Columbia; meet with Democratic activists at the Rock Hill Center for the Arts; and tour the Old Cotton Factory (converted mill) and talk about economic development, also in Rock Hill.

-Sen. Lieberman visited Charleston, SC on July 16, 2003.  He met with local activists and business leaders at Hyman's Seafood; and toured the Trident One Stop Career Center in North Charleston as part of his "Joe's Jobs Tour."

-Sen. Lieberman visited Greenville, SC on July 3, 2003.  He toured Greenville Memorial Hospital System Cancer Center & Children's Hospital and did a press availability; and attended a reception with Greenville County Democratic Party activists at 648 S. Main Street.

-Sen Graham visited Columbia, SC on July 1-2, 2003.  On late afternoon and evening of July 1 he held a couple of meetings.  On July 2 he held another meeting, attended  the South Carolina AME Convention; did an interview with WIS TV, held a lunch meeting, and did a meet and greet at the Capitol City Club.
 
 

J U N E

-Rev. Sharpton visited SC on June 29, 2003.  He preached at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Heath Springs and met with and spoke to local leaders and residents at Etta's Kitchen in Lancaster.

-Gov. Dean did a fundraiser at the home of Richland County Council member Kit Smith in Columbia, SC on the evening of June 10, 2003.

-Sen. Edwards visited SC on June 8, 2003 as part of a series of events honoring his 50th birthday.   Edwards and his parents visited Utica to see the small house they lived in around the time he was born; and he spoke at a barbeque in honor of his birthday at the Recreation Center in Seneca.
 
 

M A Y

-Rev. Sharpton visited SC on May 30-June, 1, 2003.  Arriving in Columbia early on the evening of May 30, he did an evening fundraiser at the home of Tom Moss in Orangeburg.  On May 31 he attended a picnic sponsored by Edisto Fork UM Church at Santee State Park in Santee and attended the Gospel Fest at the River Oaks Pavilion in Orangeburg.  On June 1 he preached at Edisto Fork UM Church and at St Andrews Chapel Baptist Church in Orangeburg.

-Rev. Sharpton visited SC on the afternoon and evening of May 17, 2003.  In Columbia he did meet and greet at the "Black Expo" at the Carolina Center, and dropped in at the home of Marjorie Hammock in the Spring Valley neighborhood.  He traveled to Florence, where he opened a campaign headquarters at 107 North Guerry Street, and attended a rally at the House of God Church at Wilson and Irby.

All nine candidates were in Columbia, South Carolina for the South Carolina Democratic Party State Convention at the Cantey Building, State Fairgrounds and the Democratic Presidential Debate at Drayton Hall, USC on May 3, 2003.  Most of the candidates did a number of other events:
-Gov. Dean visited SC on May 2-3, 2003.  On May 2 he attended the J-J Dinner and Jim Clyburn's Fish Fry.  On May 3 he attended the Democratic Women's Council Breakfast at Seawell's Restaurant; did the Meet and Greet at the State Fairgrounds; attended the SC DLC lunch; attended the Benedict Choir cookout; spoke at the Convention; and participated in the debate.
-Sen. Edwards visited SC on May 2-3, 2003.  On May 2 he stopped in at the J-J Dinner and attended Jim Clyburn's Fish Fry.  On May 3 he made a retail campaign stop at the Farmers Market in Columbia; did the Meet and Greet at the State Fairgrounds; spoke at the Convention; and participated in the debate. 
-Rep. Gephardt visited SC on May 2-3, 2003.  On May 2 he attended the J-J Dinner and Jim Clyburn's Fish Fry.  On May 3 he did the Meet and Greet at the State Fairgrounds; participated in the Town of Eastover parade; spoke at the Convention; attended the grand opening of the Gephardt for President headquarters; and participated in the debate.
-Sen. Graham visited SC on May 2-3, 2003.  On May 2 he attended Jim Clyburn's Fish Fry.  On May 3 he did the Meet and Greet at the State Fairgrounds; spoke at the Convention; and participated in the debate.
-Sen. Kerry visited SC on May 2-3, 2003.  On May 2 in Columbia he spoke at ceremony hosted by the South Carolina Combat Veterans Group at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; did an economic event at Rosewood Elementary School; attended the J-J Dinner and Jim Clyburn's Fish Fry.  On May 3 he had breakfast with supporters at Clarion Town House; did the Meet and Greet at the State Fairgrounds; spoke at the Convention; and participated in the debate.
-Rep. Kucinich visited SC on May 3, 2003.  He spoke at the Convention and participated in the debate.
-Sen. Lieberman visited SC on May 2-4, 2003.  On May 2 he attended the pre-J-J Dinner Reception.  On May 3 he participated in the debate.  On May 4 he visited and spoke at Sunday Church Service at Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston.
-Amb. Moseley Braun visited SC on May 2-3, 2003.  On May 2 she attended the J-J Dinner and Jim Clyburn's Fish Fry.  On May 3 she attended the Democratic Women's Council Breakfast at Seawell's Restaurant; did the Meet and Greet at the State Fairgrounds; visited the C.A. Johnson Academy to speak at International Day; spoke at the Convention; and participated in the debate.
-Rev. Al Sharpton visited SC on May 3-4, 2003.  On May 3 he spoke at the Convention and participated in the debate.  On May 4 he preached at Greater St. Lukes Baptist Church and at Jones Memorial AME Zion Church in Columbia.

A P R I L

-Sen. Kerry visited SC on April 13-14, 2003.  On April 13 he attended a social at the home of Angela and Steven Brown in Duncan (SW of Spartanburg).  On April 14 he did a breakfast at Horne's Restaurant in Florence; a luncheon at Claflin University in Orangeburg; and a reception at the home of Sharon and Nigel Bowers in Charlestown.

-Sen. Lieberman visited SC on April 13, 2003.  He attended church service, address the congregation, and breakfasted at St. Paul Baptist Church in Mullins; attended church service and addressed the congregation at New Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence; and attended a town hall meeting at Marlboro Civic Center in Bennettsville.

-Sen. Edwards visited SC on April 11-12, 2003
On April 11 arrived in Charleston did one event, then had to fly back to Washington so as not to miss votes in the Senate.  (Source: John Wagner)  A planned tour of the First Missionary Baptist Church Elder Center and Children's Daycare Center in Summerville; meeting with students, faculty and community members at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg; kick-off event for "USC for Edwards" and speech to USC students at USC Law School in Columbia; and meeting with activists and community leaders at Ramada Inn in Sumter were all cancelled.  He returned and met with Horry County Democrats at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach. 
On April 12 he attended a breakfast with area activists and community leaders at the Bennettsville Chamber of Commerce Gardens in Bennettsville; attended a breakfast with area activists and community leaders at the home of Jay Hodge in Cheraw; and delivered the luncheon speech at the "Bridging the Gap" Democratic retreat at Francis Marion University in Florence. 

-Gov. Dean visited Charleston, SC on April 5, 2003.  He attended a fundraising reception sponsored by former Governor John West and other Democrats at the home of  Dr. & Mrs. Thomas Steele, and he attended an equality conference at Physician's Auditorium on the College of Charleston campus.
 
 

M A R C H

-Rep. Gephardt visited SC on March 24, 2003.  He participated in an ecumenical prayer breakfast with Rep. James Clyburn at Friendship Baptist Church in Columbia (hosted by the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Columbia and sponsored by South Carolina Black Mayors for Gephardt); did a press availability there; attended the dedication ceremony for the I-277 pedestrian overpass with Rep. Clyburn at Lester Drive in Columbia; attended the groundbreaking of the Sumter Intermodal Transportation Center with Rep. Clyburn in Sumter; attended a luncheon and the dedication of the North Main Street Hope Center with Rep. Clyburn in Sumter; and visited with troops at Shaw Air Force Base.

-Rev. Sharpton visited SC on March 21, 2003, including an appearance before USC Law School Democrats.

-Gov. Dean visited SC on March 19, 2003, doing private events in Columbia and Beaufort.
 
 

F E B R U A R Y

-Rev. Sharpton appeared at a Church and Community Human Relations banquet organized by Rev. John Berry at the Phillis Wheatley Center in Greenville, SC on February 20, 2003.

-Rep. Gephardt visited SC on the afternoon of February 20, 2003.   (This was the third and final stop on his announcement tour; he arrived from NH).  After he and Rep. John Spratt toured Florence-Darlington Technical College, he then discussed his plan to boost trade and the economy.

-Rev. Sharpton appeared at a Church and Community Human Relations banquet organized by Rev. John Berry at the Phillis Wheatley Center in Greenville, SC on February 20, 2003

-Amb. Moseley Braun spoke at Columbia College and at an event sponsored by American Women Presidents, a political action committee, in SC on February 17, 2003.  (Final stop of a three-state pre-announcement tour--Iowa on Feb. 15 and NH on Feb. 16).

-Rev. Sharpton appeared at the International Longshoremen's Hall and at Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston, SC on February 13, 2003

-Gov. Dean visited Spartanburg, SC on the afternoon of February 13, 2003.  He had box lunch at Senior Citizens Bible Study at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church; did a meet and greet at the Beacon Inn Restaurant; toured Regenesis health facility site; and attended a reception hosted by Reps. Brenda Lee and David Mack at C.C. Woodson Center.

-Sen. Edwards visited Charleston, SC on February 8, 2003.  He took part in an education roundtable at the College of Charleston and participated in a Carolina Conversation with John Edwards organized by the South Carolina Democratic Leadership Council at William Aiken House.

-Sen. Kerry visited SC on February 2-3, 2003.  On February 2 he had coffee with The State's Lee Bandy and attorney James Smith in Columbia; spoke to Democrats at a reception organized by Smith at Smith, Ellis & Stuckey, P.A., a law firm in Columbia; attended an oyster roast reception hosted by Robert Barber at Bowen's Island Restaurant in Charleston; and attended a private dinner and overnighted in Charleston.
 
 

J A N U A R Y

-Gov. Dean visited SC on January 27-28, 2003.  On January 27 he toured Benedict College and the new Business Development Center in Columbia; attended a luncheon at United House of Prayer in Columbia; attended a reception at Doubletree Guest Suites in Charleston; attended an Alliance for Full Acceptance meeting at the same location.  On the morning of January 28 he toured the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting station at Parris Island.

-Sen. Lieberman made his first visit to SC since announcing his candidacy on January 26, 2003.  He spoke to the congregation at Sunday morning service at New Ebenezer Baptist Church in Columbia; he then attended a fundraising luncheon at a private residence in Columbia and met with local activists and supporters.  Lee Bandy of The State reported Lieberman received endorsements of: Columbia attorneys Richard and Belinda Gergel and state Reps. John Scott, D-Richland, Doug Jennings, D-Marlboro, Joel Lourie, D-Richland, and Fletcher Smith, D-Greenville.

-Sen. Edwards visited Columbia, SC on January 20, 2003.  He delivered a speech to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, then attended a reception at the home of attorney John Moylan.

-Rev. Sharpton visited SC on January 18-20, 2003.  On January 18 he preached at Mountain View Baptist Church in Greenville.  On January 19 he preached at Reedy River Baptist Church in Greenville; and at Tabernacle Baptist Church, also in Greenville.  He held a closed meeting with community leaders at the Adams Mark Hotel in Columbia and then did his weekly live radio program "SharpTalk" via phone from the hotel.  On January 20 he spoke at a breakfast in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Zion Baptist Church in Columbia.

-Rep. Gephardt visited SC on January 10, 2003.  He did a breakfast with local Democratic and union leaders and activists at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston; met privately with Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr.; met with state legislators and members of the AFL-CIO at the CWA union hall in West Columbia; and did an event on the economy with Rep. John Spratt and the South Carolina Democratic Council at the USC-Lancaster campus in Lancaster.
 

2002 
-Gov. Dean attended Renaissance Weekend in Charleston, SC on December 28-31, 2002.  Also, on December 28 in Charleston he attended receptions at the home of Diane Aghapour, chair of the Charleston County Democratic Committee, and at the home of Dr. Barbara Dilligard.  On December 29 he attended service and addressed the congregation at the Morris Brown Church.  [ed. not clear whether Dean stayed for all 4 days; 2 are certain]

-Gov. Dean visited Columbia, SC on November 19, 2002.  He met with the editorial board of the The State newspaper [see "'Howard Who' hopes to apply the 'Jimmy Who' approach in S.C." by Brad Warthen]; delivered an address at the University of South Carolina Law School; and met with Legislative Black Caucus in the Blatt Building.

-[Sen. Lieberman overnighted in Charleston, SC on October 12, 2002].  On October 13, 2002, Sen. Lieberman met with the SC Coastal Conservation League; delivered a speech at the College of Charleston; attended a fundraiser for Rep. James Clyburn; and did an evening meet and greet reception at the Charleston Place Hotel with secretary of state candidate Rick Wade and attorney general candidate Steve Benjamin. 

-Gov. Dean visited SC on September 29-30, 2002.  Late in the evening of September 29 he met with small gathering of party officials and field staff at Democratic headquarters in Columbia.  On September 30, he put in a full day.  He began with a radio interview with WLGO; had breakfast with activists at the Clarion Hotel in Columbia; breakfasted with the South Carolina Medical Society at Shoney's in Orangeberg; appeared on the radio show hosted by David Mack on WVAY in Charleston; spoke to a class at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston; and did a reception with activists in Charleston [depending on the schedule this happened at Manny's Restaurant on Highway 171 or Alice's Restaurant on King Street].

[On October 2, 2002 Sen. Kerry did a live broadcast of "Hardball with Chris Matthews" (MSNBC) at The Citadel].

-Sen. Edwards visited Columbia, SC on September 28-29, 2002.  On September 28 he met with mayors attending the South Carolina Conference of Black Mayors meeting at the Clarion Hotel.  Later he spoke at the DemFest rally featuring U.S. Senate candidate Alex Sanders, Gov. Jim Hodges, and other Democratic candidates, held in the activities center at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.   (Sen. Kerry also spoke at this event).  On September 29 he made visits to two black churches.

-On September 28, 2002  Sen. Kerry visited SC.  He did a veterans event with the lieutenant governor nominee, state Sen. Phil Leventis, at Marion Square in Charleston, and he spoke at the DemFest rally featuring U.S. Senate candidate Alex Sanders and Gov. Jim Hodges held at Martin Luther King Jr. park in Columbia.   (Sen. Edwards also spoke at this event).

-Rev. Sharpton spoke at the First Annual National Speakers Forum, an event sponsored by the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus, in West Columbia, SC on September 16, 2002.

-Rep. Gephardt visited SC on July 29, 2002.  In Rock Hill, he and Rep. John Spratt spoke with seniors at the York County Council on Aging's senior center about Social Security and prescription drugs; the two focused on the economy at a luncheon hosted by Spratt at VFW 2889 in Rock Hill; Gephardt met with Gov. Jim Hodges in Columbia; Gephardt and Rep. Jim Clyburn held an  economic summit at the Marion County Technical Education Center in Mullins; and Gephardt attended a barbecue at the home of Ronnie and Veretta Sabb in Greeleyville [Williamsburg County] with Clyburn, U.S. Senate candidate Alex Sanders, and other statewide candidates.

-Gov. Dean visited Charleston, SC on July 24-25, 2002.  On July 24 he did a lunch with South Carolina political operatives at the Renaissance Hotel Dining Room; did a call in radio show with Rep. David Mack; and did a reception with COBRA at St. Matthews Church.  On July 25 he had breakfast with Mayor Riley at Mills House; toured Children's Hospital at the Medical University of South Carolina; attended a reception for Alliance for Full Acceptance; and attended a reception at the home of Linda Ketner.

-Sen. Lieberman visited Columbia, SC on July 14-15, 2002.  On July 14 he attended a fundraiser for the House Caucus.  On July 15 he visited with the SC coordinated campaign staff and visited the SC Emergency Operations Center with Rep. John Spratt.

-Sen. Edwards visited SC on May 12, 2002.  He spoke to a group of Democrats in Greenville.  He had planned to attend the Galivants Ferry Stump Meeting, a tradition-laden Democratic event >, on May 13, but a vote came up in the Senate. 

-Sen. Edwards visited SC on May 3-4, 2002.  On May 3 he appeared at a fish fry organized by Rep. Jim Clyburn in a Columbia parking garage and overnighted at the Governor's Mansion.  On May 4 he delivered the keynote address at the South Carolina Democratic Convention.   (Sen. Kerry also appeared at the fish fry and overnighted at the Mansion; he spoke to the J-J Dinner on Friday night).

-On May 3, 2002 in Columbia, SC, Sen. Kerry spoke at a program at the Vietnam Memorial, spoke at the Democratic Party's annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner, and appeared at a fish fry organized by Rep. Jim Clyburn in a Columbia parking garage.  He overnighted at the Governor's Mansion.  (Sen. Edwards also appeared at the fish fry and overnighted at the Mansion; he spoke to the party's convention on Saturday). 

-On April 15, 2002 in Columbia, SC, Sen. Lieberman delivered an education policy address at Allen University, a historically black university; toured the McKissick Museum; and spoke to and met with University of South Carolina Law School Democrats.

-Sen. Lieberman visited SC on March 24-25, 2002.   On March 24 he had dinner with Gov. Hodges.  On March 25 in Columbia he attended a fundraiser for Alex Sanders; met with Columbia political leaders; lunched with African American clergy and community leaders and Rep. James Clyburn; and spoke at the USC Department of Government and International Studies.

-Rep. Gephardt visited SC on March 15-16, 2002.  On March 15 he appeared with Rep. Jim Clyburn in Orangeburg.  On March 16 he and Clyburn attended at labor rally for dockworkers in Charleston, and he spoke at the Charleston County Democratic convention at International Longshoreman's Association Hall.

-On March 4, 2002, Gov. Dean was keynote speaker at Third Annual Governor's Summit on Growth (focus on transportation) in Columbia, SC.  He also attended a private coffee hosted Don Fowler.
 

2001
-Gov. Dean attended Renaissance Weekend in Charleston, SC at the end of December 2001.

-Rev. Sharpton spoke on Rejoice 1370-AM and at a community fellowship celebration at Freedom Temple Ministries in Rock Hill, SC on November 13, 2001

-Sen. Lieberman visited SC on May 30-31, 2001.  On the evening of May 30 he attended an evening fundraising reception at the home of Jan and Larry Lipov in South Windermere (Charleston).  The next morning he attended a fundraiser for Alex Sanders in Columbia. (The Post and Courier)
