Overview
The February 24 county caucuses
came one week after the Wisconsin primary had knocked Gov. Howard Dean
out of the race, leaving Sen. John Kerry and Sen. John Edwards as the two
major candidates in the race. Kerry did wage a campaign here, putting
four staff on the ground, having Teresa Heinz Kerry visit the state on
February 23, and securing endorsements of many of the state's top Democrats.
(Kerry has another Idaho connection through his vacation home). Dean
had made a couple of visits in 2003. The Utah primary and Hawaii
caucuses also occurred on February 24. However, most of the candidates'
attention focused on the upcoming March 2 Super Tuesday contests.
