County Chair --heads Dean's Warren County Steering Committee.
Burns was born and raised
a Republican but became a Democrat when he went to Simpson College.
There, in 1976, he supported the campaigns of first Sen. Fred Harris and
then Jimmy Carter. Also in 1976 he became a member of the Warren
County Democrats' central committee; he has served on the committee nearly
continuously since then. Burns was county chair for Gary Hart 's
campaign in 1984 and 1988. He was less active in politics for a number
of years to help raise his children, then became party chair in March 2002.
Burns met Dean on Feb. 17, 2003 at the Warren County Off-Year Caucus at
Indianola Masonic Temple and was impressed by his stance against
war in Iraq. He announced his support for Dean to the central committee
in August 2003.
