Presidential Primary Election -- Tuesday, March 9, 2004
In May 2003 the Texas Legislature passed a bill (H.B. No. 2496) to move the presidential primary date from the second Tuesday in March to the first Tuesday in March (March 2, 2004).  Gov. Perry signed the bill into law on June 18.  However, the Texas legislature then became embroiled in an extended debate over congressional redistricting legislation, and, during its third called session, moved the primary/caucus date back to March 9, 2004, amid protests from Democrats.  Gov. Perry signed the bill on October 13, 2003.
