New Hampshire's population of more the 1.2 million includes 633,230 registered voters (as of Sept. 2001). Candidates will try to reach roughly 167,000 registered Democrats.  The over 250,000 Independent voters will also be a very important target group.  Candidates have made many visits to the Granite State since 2001; by early 2003 they were starting to build their organizations and line up supporters.

Sen. John Kerry from neighboring Massachusetts is seen as the favorite to win the New Hampshire Democratic Primary.  New Hampshire receives much exposure to Boston media, and the conventional wisdom is that Kerry will also gain support from people who have moved up to New Hampshire from Massachusetts.  Former Gov. Howard Dean also has a built-in advantage; as a full-time candidate hailing from neighboring Vermont  it is very convenient for him to travel to New Hampshire.  Sen. Joe Lieberman is also from New England and his more conservative message may resonate here.  Rep. Dick Gephardt may benefit from his long ties to the state, going back to his first visit in 1985.  Sen. John Edwards offers a fresh face and hopes to replicate the success another Southerner, Bill Clinton, achieved in 1992.
