Return to NH Visits-2003
Looking to 2004             . . . updated January 19, 2003
In 2002, there was significant stirring in New Hampshire politics.  Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D) made a bid for U.S. Senate, opening up a competitive race for Governor.  Shaheen faced Rep. John Sununu (R), who defeated incumbent U.S. Senator Bob Smith (R) in the primary.  Both U.S. House races were competitive and the State Senate was in close balance.  The effect of this on the presidential race was that Democratic presidential hopefuls had ample opportunities to stump for local Democratic candidates.1  Visiting New Hampshire was little trouble for two prospects from neighboring states, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Vermont Gov. Howard Dean; Dean in particular took advantage of his proximity, making more than twice as many visits and spending more than twice as much time in the state as any of the other prospective candidates during 2001-2002.  The lack of visits by Gore and Daschle is noteworthy, given that the two decided not to run.
