OVERVIEW: The Iowa State Fair,  three forums on successive days, and major tours by many of the candidates highlighted a busy August in Iowa:
Iowa State Fair: August 7-Graham.  August 13-Kerry.  August 14-Braun, Dean, Gephardt, Kucinich.  August 15-Edwards, Lieberman. 
-Gov. Dean, Sen. Edwards, Rep. Gephardt, Sen. Graham, Sen. Kerry, and Rep. Kucinich participated in an event sponsored by the Hawkeye Labor Council's COPE (Committee on Political Education) and the Iowa Democratic Party at Teamsters Hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 15, 2003.
-Gov. Dean, Sen. Edwards, Rep. Gephardt, Sen. Graham, Sen. Kerry, and Rep. Kucinich and Amb. Moseley Braun participated in a presidential forum moderated by Gov. Tom Vilsack during the Governor's Conference on Public Health at Drake University's Sheslow Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa on August 14, 2003
-Gov. Dean, Sen. Edwards, Rep. Gephardt, Sen. Graham, Sen. Kerry, and Rep. Kucinich participated in the presidential forum at the 47th Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO Convention at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa on August 13, 2003.

-Rep. Kucinich visited Iowa on August 31-September 2, 2003
On August 31 he attended the Clinton Labor Congress Labor Day Picnic at Eagle Point Park in Clinton; did a rally on the farm -- picnic and concert fundraiser at Francis and Susan Thicke's Radiance Dairy Farm (organic dairy farm) in Fairfield; and attended a house party at the home of John Tapscott in Indianola.
On September 1 he marched in the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor Day Parade; spoke at the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor Picnic at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, 4H Building; and held a "Power to the People" Labor Day Rally at Old Brick Church in Iowa City.
On September 2 in Iowa City he walked through the University of Iowa campus and delivered a speech at the Memorial Union; and delivered a lecture "How to Create the Future" at the Memorial Union at Iowa State University in Ames.

-Sen. Graham visited Iowa on August 29-September 1, 2003.
At mid-day on August 29 he did lunch and a roundtable discussion with farmers at The Country House Restaurant in Colo.
On August 30 he did a Workday (his 392nd) on the Middleswart Farm in Indianola.
On August 31 he flipped pancakes and met members of the labor community South Central Labor Pancake Breakfast in the 4-H Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
On September 1 he marched in the Labor Day Parade and speak at the post-parade picnic in the 4-H Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

-Sen. Kerry visited Iowa on August 26, 2003.  He did a veterans event at the Iowa Vietnam War Memorial on the SE side of the Capitol Grounds in Des Moines; and had lunch with Dallas County Democrats at the Law Firm of Hefner and Bergkamp , P.C. in Adel.

-Rep. Kucinich visited Dubuque, Iowa on August 23, 2003.  He held a rally at Five Flags and a post-rally event with volunteers and those interested from the rally at Mississippi Mud Bistro.

-Sen. Lieberman visited the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa on August 15, 2003.  With Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller he visited the 85-foot Iowa Watershed Model in the Natural Resources Building, spoke and answered questions at the Des Moines Register Soapbox, and visited fairgoers at the Varied Industries Building. 

-Amb. Moseley Braun visited Iowa on August 14, 2003.  She visited the Iowa State Fair, greeting attendees at the Democrats' booth and enjoying some butter pecan ice cream; and participated in the Governor's Conference on Public Heath at Drake University.  Because of the power blackout she and a couple of aides decided to drive to Chicago, and they stopped at the Country Kitchen in Davenport on the way there.

-Sen. Edwards did a "Real Solutions Tour," a six-day, 21-county family bus trip in eastern Iowa from August 13-18, 2003.  Mrs. Edwards and their children Cate, 21, Emma Claire, 5, and Jack, 3, joined Sen. Edwards at some of the events.

On August 13 he opened his campaign headquarters at 626 Sycamore Street in Waterloo; participated in the presidential candidate forum at Iowa Federation of Labor convention in Waterloo; met with Democratic activists at the home of Peg Dunbar in Waverly; stopped in at the Iowa Federation of Labor reception in Waterloo; was the featured guest at a fundraiser for state Rep. Deborah Berry at the Waterloo Center for the Arts; and met with Floyd County Democratic activists at 101 North Main in Charles City.
On August 14 he and his family had breakfast with Democratic activists at the Elks Lodge in Mason City; visited the downtown area; had coffee with Democratic activists at Camp David Restaurant in Iowa Falls; met with Democratic activists at Fuller Hall Recreation Center in Webster City; and Edwards participated in the Governor's Conference on Public Heath at Drake University in Des Moines.
On August 15 he and his family visited the Iowa State Fair; met with Democratic activists at Sophie's Tea Room in Toledo; continued his Main Street Tour in Vinton from Cameron's Clothing and met with Democratic activists at 4th Street Coffee Company; Edwards spoke at the Hawkeye Labor Council/Linn County Democratic Presidential Forum at Teamsters Hall in Cedar Rapids; and he and his family met with Democratic activists at the home of David Redlawsk and Aletia Morgan in Iowa City.
On August 16 he and his family had breakfast with local Democratic leaders at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery in Cedar Rapids; had coffee with Democratic activists at Two Brothers Restaurant in Independence; met with Democratic activists at the home of Peg Sherret in Oelwein; continued his Main Street Tour in Dubuque at Shamrock Imports; attended a community gathering at the May Law Firm in Dubuque; and met with Jackson County Democrats at the home of Rep. Bob Osterhaus in Maquoketa. 
On August 17 he and his family attended the Scott County Democratic Party's Folk Fest at the Outdoor Pavilion at Carpenters' Local #4 in Davenport; attended a community gathering at Starr's Cave Nature Center in Burlington; met with Democratic activists at the Art Gallery on Main in Mount Pleasant; met with Democratic activists at the Carrington Point Party Room in Fairfield; and attended a community gathering at Hotel Ottumwa in Ottumwa. 
On August 18 he and his family had coffee with Democratic activists at Second Street Cafe in Ottumwa; and they wrapped up the tour with a BBQ at Water Works Park in Des Moines.

On August 13 he held a public forum with Bremer County Democrats and peace community activists at Godfather's in Waverly; and participated in the Iowa Federation of Labor's presidential forum and the subsequent reception at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo.
On August 14 in Des Moines he attended the Iowa State Fair; held a forum with childcare leaders at King Elementary School; participated in the Governor's Conference on Public Heath at Drake University; attended a SEIU/Iowans for Health Care reception at Drake University; had dinner with the vegetarian community at A Dong Restaurant; and attended a house party.
On August 15 in Cedar Rapids he participated in a pre-forum fundraiser with special guest Ed Asner at IBEW Hall; and participated in the Hawkeye Labor Conference event at Teamsters Hall in Cedar Rapids.
On August 16 he, accompanied by Asner, had lunch with labor leaders and Democrats at Riverside Restaurant in Clinton; that evening he did events in St. Paul, Minnesota (a reception at Macalester College and a rally at Central High School).
On the afternoon of August 17 he, accompanied by Asner, spoke and threw the first pitch at the Quad Cities River Bandits baseball game in Davenport; with Asner attended the Scott County Democratic Picnic/Folk Fest at Carpenter's Local #4 Outdoor Pavilion; attended an ice cream social/meet and greet at Weed Park in Muscatine; and held a rally at the Port of Burlington in Burlington.
On August 18 he held a public meeting at the Ivy Bake Shoppe in Ft. Madison; held a public meeting at R Place Café in Bloomfield; held a public meeting at Country Kitchen in Ottumwa; held a public meeting at Tasco's in Oskaloosa; held a press conference and rally at the courthouse in Indianola; held a press conference at Tiger Drive In in Greenfield; and held a farm rally at the home of Denise O'Brien in Atlantic.

On August 16 he spoke at a Carroll County Democratic reception hosted by Delores and Norbert Hagemann at the Family Table in Carroll; a Crawford County Democratic reception hosted by Crawford County Democrats at Cronk's Café in Denison; held a rally with supporters hosted by Sen. Mike Gronstal, Emil Pavich, Bill Biede and Rich Price at the Travel Lodge in Council Bluffs; spoke at a Montgomery County Democratic reception at the Red Oak Fire Station in Red Oak; and at a Page County Democratic reception hosted by Tom Fine and Bob Williams at the Lied Center in Clarinda.
On August 17 he spoke at a Union County Democratic reception hosted by Lori Hayes at Moxie Java in Creston; a Lucas County Democratic reception hosted by Jerry and Joann Narber at Donna's Place in Chariton; an Appanoose County Democratic reception hosted by Rep. Kurt Swaim ant the Appanoose County Democrats at VFW Hall 526 in Centerville; a Davis County Democratic reception hosted by Ralph Johnson and the Davis County Democrats at Get To Gather Room in Bloomfield; and a Henry County Democratic reception hosted by Henry County Democrats at the Student Union Hall at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant.

-Gov. Dean visited Iowa on August 13-15, 2003.   Aug. 13: Dike, Waterloo, New Hartford.  -  Aug. 14: Newton, Des Moines, Nevada.  -  Aug. 15: Nevada, Eldora, Marshalltown, Chelsea, Cedar Rapids.
On August 13 he set out his rural development policy at Grundy County Lake in Dike; participated in the Iowa Federation of Labor's presidential forum and the subsequent reception at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo; and met with Butler County Democrats at the New Hartford Public Library.
On August 14 he met with Jasper County Democrats at Uncle Nancy's Coffeehouse & Eatery in Newton; visited the Iowa State Fair; and participated in the Governor's Conference on Public Health at Drake University in Des Moines; held a jam session with Michael "Hawkeye" Herman at Blues on Grand in Des Moines; and appeared at Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald's fundraiser at the Score Pavilion in Nevada.
On August 15 he toured the BECON (Biomass Energy Conversion) facility in Nevada; met with community members and people involved in developing the new farmer-owned Pine Lake ethanol plant at the Eldora Public Library; held a reception with Marshall County Democrats at the VFW Hall in Marshalltown; met with Tama County Democrats at the home of former Iowa Farmers Union President Gary Lamb in Chelsea; and participated in the Hawkeye Labor Conference event at Teamsters Hall in Cedar Rapids.

-Sen. Kerry visited Iowa on August 12-15, 2003.   Aug. 12: Mason City, Klemme area, Algona, Webster City.  -  Aug. 13: Des Moines, Waterloo, Independence.  -  Aug. 14: Des Moines, Knoxville, Newton.  Aug. 15: Vinton, Cedar Rapids.
On August 12 he spoke to Cerro Gordo County Democrats at the Rose Bowl Restaurant on Hwy 65 in Mason City; accompanied by farmers and environmental activists Kerry focused on hog lots, also known as confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), stopping at Gloria Goll's home in the Klemme area and speaking in front of a closed CAFO near Goll's house; he attended a reception with Kossuth County Democrats at the Chrome Country Inn at Hwy 18 and Hwy 169 in Algona; drove by more CAFOs; and attended a Hamilton County Democratic Reception at Webster City Convention Center in Webster City.
On August 13 he attended the Iowa Head Start Conference at First Baptist Church in Johnston; visited the Iowa State Fair; participated in the Iowa Federation of Labor's presidential forum and returned for the subsequent reception at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo ; and attended a reception at the Two Brothers Restaurant in Independence.
On August 14 in Des Moines he attended a 21st Century Forum breakfast at the Hotel Fort Des Moines; had lunch with African American leaders, hosted by former State Rep. Willie Glanton, at Corinthian Baptist Church; and participated in the Governor's Conference on Public Health at Drake University; he attended a Marion County Democratic reception at the home of Maureen Nichols in Knoxville; and had coffee with Jasper County Democrats at Uncle Nancy's Coffee Shop in Newton.
On August 15 he had breakfast with Benton County Democrats at the Lickety Split Restaurant in Vinton; he had meetings with local Democrats in the Linn County and Johnson County throughout the afternoon; and in the evening participated in the Hawkeye Labor Conference presidential forum at Teamsters Hall in Cedar Rapids.

-Rep. Gephardt received the endorsement of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters at a rally with Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa and rank and file members at the Teamsters Hall on Delaware Ave in Des Moines, Iowa on August 9, 2003.   This was the second stop on a three-city tour: Detroit, MI, Des Moines, IA, and  Manchester, NH. 

-Sen. Graham and his family made a nine-day "Graham Family Vacation" RV tour around eastern Iowa from August 6-14, 2003.  Aug. 6: Des Moines.  -  Aug. 7: Des Moines.  -  Aug. 8: Indianola, Lucas, Chariton, Lake Rathbun.  -  Aug. 9: Ottumwa, West Point, Ft. Madison, Burlington.  -  Aug. 10: Burlington, Mt. Pleasant, Eldridge.  -  Aug. 11: Quad Cities, Solon area.  -  Aug. 12: Calmar, Dyersville, Dubuque.  -  Aug. 13: Independence, Waterloo.  - Aug. 14: Des Moines.  Two RVs were used on the tour.  In some instances, family members in the second RV followed a different itinerary.
On August 6 Graham marched in the Iowa State Fair Parade along Grand Avenue in Des Moines.
On August 7 Graham visited the Iowa State Fair; did a grand opening of his headquarters in Des Moines; and held a Grillin' with the Grahams event on the Terrace at Gray's Lake in Des Moines.
On August 8 Graham went to the National Balloon Classic in Indianola, where he went up in a tethered balloon; had lunch with Warren County Democrats at the Cottage Inn in Indianola; toured the John L. Lewis Labor Museum in Lucas; attended an ice cream social at the Lucas County Historical Museum in Chariton; and did a Grillin' with the Grahams event at Buck Creek on Lake Rathbun. 
On August 9 Graham did meet and greet with Ottumwa Democrats at the Country Junction Restaurant in Ottumwa; attended the Sweet Corn Festival at the Town Square in West Point; visited the Maize Maze in the Ft. Madison area; and attended the Des Moines County Democrats Steak Fry at the Port of Burlington in Burlington.
On August 10 Graham attended church services in Burlington; visited the Midwest Old Time Threshers' Heritage Museum in Mt. Pleasant; and did a Grillin' with the Grahams event at Scott County Park in Eldridge.
On August 11 Graham held an economic roundtable with activists in the Quad Cities area; and did Grillin' with the Grahams event at Lake McBride State Park four miles west of Solon.
On August 12 Graham toured the Dairy Center at Calmar; had lunch with Democratic activists at the Train Station in Calmar; participated in a family baseball game at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville; and did a Grillin' with the Grahams event at the campgrounds at Dubuque Yacht Basin.
On August 13 Graham went trout fishing; addressed the Iowa Federation of Labor at their convention at the Four Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo and attended the subsequent reception; and did a Grillin' with the Grahams event at George Wythe State Park on Hwy 218 north of Waterloo.
On August 14 in Des Moines, Graham particpated in the Governor's Conference on Public Health at Drake University; and he attended an Iowa Cubs baseball game with Fergie Jenkins at Sec Taylor Stadium.

-Sen. Lieberman campaigned in Iowa on August 6-7, 2003, continuing his "Joe's Jobs Tour."  On August 6 he attended a reception with Warren County Democratic activists at the home of state Rep. Mark Davitt in Indianola; attended a roundtable discussion with Iowa Manufacturing Extension Partnership (IMEP) leaders in Ankeny; and attended a reception with Polk County Democrats at the home of Attorney General Tom Miller in Des Moines.  On the morning of August 7 he met with local residents for a "Cup of Joe with Joe" stop at the Cedar Rapids Coffee Company in Cedar Rapids; and spoke at Kirkwood Community College in Marion.

-Gov. Dean campaigned in Iowa on August 6-7, 2003, continuing his "Get on Board" Tour. 
On August 6 he did five "Get on Board with Dean" events, meeting with undecided caucus goers at Knuckolls Street Diner in Glenwood; at the Firehouse Brewery in Red Oak; at L & J's Kitchen in Corning; at The Restored Depot in Creston; and at Winterset City Park in Winterset; he then attended the MeetUp.com event at the Court Avenue Brewing Company in Des Moines. 
On August 7 he did more "Get on Board with Dean" events, meeting with undecided caucus goers at 7 Star Restaurant in Hampton; at Pizza Ranch in Clarion; at the Cedar Room Restaurant Art Gallery in Humboldt; at Arlington Place Senior Living in Pocahontas; at Lake Shore Cafe in Storm Lake; he collected the endorsement of State Rep. Greg Stevens at the Stevens' home in Milford; and participated in the Dickinson County Democrats' presidential forum at Arnolds Park Pavilion in Arnolds Park.

-Rep. Kucinich visited Des Moines, Iowa on August 6, 2003.  Arriving at about 2:30, he held a press conference at the Plumbers and Steamfitters; taped some video for Channel 13; and marched in the State Fair Parade and afterwards held a rally at Nollen Plaza in downtown.

-Rev. Sharpton participated in Sen. Harkin's Hear It From the Heartland Forum at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa on August 6, 2003.  He did an local TV interview and met with local Democratic leaders before the event.

-On August 3, 2003 Amb. Moseley Braun flew to Waterloo, Iowa, where she participated in Sen. Harkin's Hear It From The Heartland Forum at the Waterloo Center for the Arts.  After the forum she did a brief profile interview with Charlotte Eby of the Waterloo Courier.  Braun and interim campaign director Pat Botterman then traveled to Olwein, where she attended the Fayette County Democrats Hog Roast Fundraiser.  They then drove to Chicago.

-Sen. Graham visited Iowa on August 1-3, 2003.  On August 1 in Sioux City he held an economic roundtable at The Daily Grind; appeared live on the 6 p.m. news on KTIV Channel; 4 and attended a dessert reception with the Truman Club at the home of Beth and David Noyse. 
On August 2 he did a workday at Little Sioux Ethanol Plant on Hwy. 3 between Cleghorn and Marcus; and had dinner with beef producers and county leaders at the Kossuth County Fair, followed by meet and greet at the Kossuth County Democrats booth. 
On August 3 he attended services at the First Congregational Church and then had coffee there; lunched with activists at Chandler's Restaurant in Mason City; met and greeted activists at Estelle and Ed Gabel's home at Mason City; and met and greeted activists at Bloomer's Cafe and Coffeehouse in Fort Dodge.
