Looking to 2004  . . . updated September 29, 2003
Democratic presidential candidates are looking to build strong grassroots organizations over the coming months.  State and local officials will be wooed for their support, with the endorsements of Gov. Tom Vilsack and Sen. Tom Harkin looming as the biggest prizes.  The help that many of the presidential hopefuls provided to Iowa candidates and campaigns during the '02 cycle may now pay off in the form of endorsements.  The candidates will vie for labor support, since organized labor includes some of the most active elements of the party.  Candidates' positions on agricultural issues such as ethanol and trade will also be watched closely.
